Where Did He Really Come From?
Everyone has heard about George Soros. Even if you know little to nothing about Mr. Soros, you have heard his name. Mr Soros is of Hungarian and Swiss descent. He is well known for his philanthropy, and the fact that he is a very successful investor. Soros is also an author and is a Master’s graduate in Philosophy, from the London School of Economics.
Soros was actually born in Budapest, Hungary, to a Jewish family. His family were considered to be ‘non-practicing Jews’ because of their wealth. Apparently many Jewish people at that time, particularly after the Holocaust, had difficulty in coming to terms with the wealth. This obviously shaped young George Soros in his desire to give and help others.
Soros was only a young teenager during WWII and he was lucky to pass himself off as a Christian, due to his family’s non-practice of the Jewish faith. He managed to survive through the war and eventually, in 1947, was able to immigrate to England, where he attended school.
He eventually graduated and got his first job in investment banking with Singer and Friedlander. In 1956, Soros took his first job in New York City and began building his career, continued his education, and began building his net worth. Read his profile at Forbes.
He developed a theory, which he called “reflexivity” that he developed as a follower of Karl Popper. This would be a turning point for him and his career continued to soar.
By 1970, George Soros had set up a fund that began as a fund that was carried the name Soros but was eventually changed to the Quantum Fund. By the mid 1990s, he had amassed over a $24 Billion dollar family fortune.
Changing the World
With the wealth and the success, George Soros became a very well-respected man. He was known all over the world for his success story. Due to this success, he was able to play a major role in the molding and shaping of the world in those years of rebuilding after WWII, some of which may still arguably be happening, right here in the United States.
Soros played a heavy hand in the 1990s transitioning to capitalism in Eastern Europe, moving that part of the world further away from Communism. Soros has donated over $11 billion dollars to philanthropic causes.
Mr Soros has been, and continues to be, a strong influence in American politics. By donating millions of dollars to political candidates, he has done much to help influence the voices in Washington, DC. He was a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton during both runs for office. He has also supported other candidates both here, and abroad. Know more on investopedia.com about George Soros.
