In 2007, an event took place that set in motion what is today one of the biggest Frontera Funds in the United States. Dubbed as America’s toughest Sheriff, Joe Arpaio was someone who was known for putting the bad guys away. But this all changed when he was behind the arrest of Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin.

Lacey and Larkin both belonged to the Hispanic community and had been living in Arizona for an extremely extended period. In October of that year, the two were taken out of their homes and into custody, through no fault of their own. Read more: Jim Larkin | Huffington Post

They were kept in separate prisons that were under Arpaio’s jurisdiction but weren’t being told specifically what they were being held for. This wasn’t the first time that he was doing such a deed, in the past, he had arrested and detained numerous people who were mostly coming from Latin America and other countries.

Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin both came from media backgrounds, and soon the news about their arrest broke out, causing widespread agitation among people who had Latin American heritage. This uproar caused some serious repercussions for Arpaio, with him being tried for wrongful detention and prosecution of individuals who had done nothing wrong.

Because of these unlawful deeds carried out by Arpaio, Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin filed a suit against him, for malicious prosecution. Because in the past Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin had voiced their opinions about Arpaio, they were now his target, but with the law on their side, they were in the clear, with an enormous amount of negative light falling on Arpaio. He was then forced to settle with the two people that he had wrongfully detained and had to pay them a vast sum of money as compensation. Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin soon realized that this isn’t the first or last time like something like this is going to happen, and thus need to be able to help people against this kind of injustice that is caused to them in society. They, therefore, decided to set up the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, hoping to be of immense help to the people of the Hispanic community.

Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin both have always believed in giving a helping hand to the less fortunate individuals in society and thus found this to be a brilliant way to help people and safeguard them so that they never have to go through what they were forced to go through. The organization is also aimed at helping other nonprofit organizations and charities that are currently fighting for the fundamental and civil rights of people coming from Hispanic communities.
